Y.O.G.I. Muzik

Y.O.G.I. Muzik, short for Young OG Muzik, is a rapper, entrepreneur, and longtime member of BangaNation from Portsmouth, Virginia. His relationship with music began through tragedy. After losing his father at just 10 years old, he turned to writing and discovered an ability to articulate thoughts, emotions, and pain that were difficult to express anywhere else.

Writing soon turned into rapping, and rapping turned into competition. Y.O.G.I. sharpened his skills by battling older MCs throughout Portsmouth, often finding himself in circles with rappers years ahead of him. By 16, he had built a reputation as one of the city’s standout young lyricists.

At the time, he performed under the name Young Future. Throughout the early and mid-2000s, he became a recurring presence on BangaNation releases while continuing to develop alongside other artists from the movement. In 2008, he released his first official mixtape, Something Special, beginning a solo catalog that would eventually take him beyond Virginia.

After winning a BET College Tour rap battle competition, Young Future relocated to Georgia to pursue music full-time. In 2010, he released Back 2 the Future, a mixtape led by the record “Pluto.” Not long afterward, Atlanta rapper Future began his own rise to national prominence, eventually releasing the album Pluto.

Friends and supporters encouraged Y.O.G.I. to respond publicly and use the similarities to create controversy. He refused. Rather than building attention through a feud, he believed his music and talent should be enough to establish his identity.

He eventually retired the Young Future name and reinvented himself as Fuey Hendrix. When Future later began using the Future Hendrix moniker and announced a project titled Hndrxx, the similarities struck Y.O.G.I. again. Whether coincidence or something more, the experience changed his perspective on chasing recognition through the traditional music industry.

Instead of competing for the industry’s attention, he decided he didn’t need it.

Y.O.G.I. moved further underground and began concentrating on building a direct relationship with listeners. He recorded and released music online, cultivated an audience that could receive new records directly in their inboxes, and experimented with ways independent artists could turn genuine supporters into a sustainable fanbase without depending on labels, radio, or the traditional mainstream machine.

That philosophy eventually became bigger than his own music. As an entrepreneur, Y.O.G.I. has continued developing systems and ideas designed to help independent artists get heard, build ownership, connect directly with their audience, and generate revenue without waiting for the industry to give them permission.

Today, Y.O.G.I. Muzik—Young OG Muzik— represents the culmination of those different eras: the 10-year-old who wrote to process the loss of his father, the teenage battle rapper, Young Future, Fuey Hendrix, the BangaNation MC, and ultimately the independent artist and businessman who chose ownership over industry acceptance.

More than two decades after he first made his name in Portsmouth, he continues to record and release new music. The goal, however, has evolved.

Y.O.G.I. isn’t trying to find a way into the music industry anymore. He’s building a way around it.
